Follow this link to This I Believe to browse 2-3 radio essays written by ordinary Americans articulating their personal beliefs. After analyzing the types of topics and the ways a personal narrative provides illustrative concrete details, brainstorm a list of beliefs you could write about.
Browse 1995-present Pulitzer Prize winning Feature Photography based on personal interest and find out more by clicking "More Details." Click on "Works" tab to view the series of thumbnails; double-click for larger versions. Browse images, selecting one with details you can understand and discuss in depth. Read the caption that explains the photo and consider ways that the caption shapes your understanding of the situation being photographed. How can PROXIMITY, ALIGNMENT, REPETITION, CONTRAST, and FOCUS be used to understand the composition of the image? How do the SPEAKER, AUDIENCE, and CONTENT reveal the PURPOSE of the image? How does the caption employ rhetorical strategies to extend the argument made by the image? Discuss with a partner.

Homework for 1/25
Choose a college or university of interest to you. Find 3+ visual images associated with that college: photographs, maps, charts, tables, graphs.... These could be on-line or print materials you have access to at home or in the guidance office. If possible, copy and paste images along with any associated captions into a word processed document that analyzes the composition of the images, and how elements of the image (as well as any accompanying text) reveal what face the college or university is trying to show to its prospective students and their families. Make reference to any of the elements of visual literacy present in the images - Focus, Proximity, Contrast, Repetition, Alignment. What argument does this group of images make about why an individual student should consider this choice? 500-700 words.

Watch the two advertisements embedded here for Chris Rector and Ed Mazurek. Complete a Discussion Prep worksheet including a “Says/Does” analysis on a series of five ‘moves’ made within the ads. Prepare for graded discussion addressing rhetorical strategies employed by each campaign.
For your convenience, I've provided live links for Task #2: Read, annotate, and analyze 2 movie reviews Read and annotate two movie reviews about the same recent movie from two different reputable sources. Writing should be from 2011 or 2012 and must be appropriately well-developed (700-1000 words) Here are some suggested places to browse for model reviews. The following file is a .pdf version of the Textual Analysis Sheet required to be filled out on the two movie reviews. You should have received two hard copies at the end of the school year, but perhaps one or more has gone astray? (Note: this is a slightly different version than you received but covers all the same turf.)
Recorder for each essay will post synthesis of discussion, including 1-3 quotes, under the 'discussion' tab based on essay grouping by 2:15 p.m. the day after discussion. Change the subject heading to identify the title of the essay discussed and your AP period. (Ex: Progress and Change W1) The summary itself should be copied and pasted into the body of the reply. Sign your name at the end of the post.

View the attached .pdf file highlighting six strategies writers use to make their writing more interesting. Create 1 new sentence for your "On Being" personal essay utilizing each strategy (6 new sentences total) If you are already utilizing a specific strategy, write out a current sentence and identify the strategy. You may choose not to use these new sentences in your finished work, but be prepared to demonstrate that you created the necessary sentences.
